Happy Leap Year Day! Spring is almost here, and already I'm having allergies. The sunshine is nice coming through my office window, but this sneezing is driving me crazy. Weather like this makes me wish I was out skiing and enjoying the sunshine while whooshing through cool, crisp mountain air. I hope everyone had a chance to take advantage of the fabulous ski season we've had this year! This year I decided to get plenty of time on the mountain, so I signed up to be a ski school teacher. My kids were great, and they learned very quickly, following me around like a big mother duck. None of them had ever been on skis before, but now they can make "pizzas" and "fries" with the best of them! ("Pizza" is the wedge shape with your skis used by beginners to slow down, "fries" is the more speedy downhill position). I like to take time once in a while to do something very different from my job. As a designer, it is very important to go back to nature and my own experiences for inspiration. Sometimes there is risk in these diversions, as there is in skiing both on the mountain and on the snowy roads. But, if we hide away from everything in order to be safe, we will never really live. These pastimes allow us to take more pleasure in our lives, both at home and in the workplace.

Here at Midori Yoshikawa Interior Design, we enjoy a wide range of clients and project opportunities. I am currently working with a company out of Japan called Maple Homes, and have recently completed material choices for the latest model house. Wow! We've been working on this project for nearly a year, covering everything from space planning to lighting design to bathroom designs. It's so hard to believe that we are almost finished! But here we are, in the final stages of design and picking out the fabric and furniture materials. The furniture chosen for these spaces will help to maintain a contemporary ambience, and will also bring a sense of historical presence to each space. Material choices here are key, and provide a great example of combining antique or classical furniture with modern fabrics. Happy Valentine's Day everyone! This month has been so busy already at our little office, and I apologize for the late start on the blog. I am working on several fun projects right now, which I will share with you over the next couple of weeks. Given the spirit of this romantic holiday which is happening today, I would also like to share with you some insight on my most recent publication. The Bellevue Reporter has recently published an article for me - just in time for Valentine's Day - which discusses one of the most important topics to me in interior design. I hope everyone enjoys the article, and that you may find some inspiration from my suggestions. May all of my good friends have much luck with Cupid in their lives today, and in the year to come! If you have any questions or comments about this article, I would love to hear from you! Email me any time.

Did you have fun on Valentine's Day? I know Midori did! Talk about a romantic evening for two!

Midori's evening was reserved for the most important man in her life, the dashing young Yuma Yoshikawa! When asked which favorite girl he would like to give candy to, Yuma mysteriously replied that he had no favorite girl... at school! But, with hard-won allowance money and the romantic spirit of a true gentleman, this pint-sized Casanova ventured out to the local Flower Shop - Mommy in tow - to purchase a beautiful bouquet of Valentine's Day Tulips of his own choosing. With flowers in hand and a smile on his face, Yuma silently presented his prize to his best girl; Mommy Midori! (Click here to see Midori with her Valentine's Day date!)

But look out Yuma, you may have competition! While hard at work in her Eastside office on Valentine's Day evening, Midori was surprised with roses from yet another suitor! Who was this secret admirer? Brad Pitt, Gary Locke, Bill Gates? Sir Mix-a-lot? We won't tell. Your secret's safe with me, secret admirer! (Just make sure that next time you bring roses for the assistant, too!) Click here to see Midori with her mysterious V-day roses. XOXO!
